Making Your Web Site

Some Options

You have several options in programs to make a web site. You can use an expensive program like Dream Weaver. I have no experience with Dream Weaver because I am too poor to buy such a program. More power to you if you want to go that route. Some people use it to great advantage.

Another is FrontPage Express. I do have some experience with that one but I didn't like it. But you just might like it, so check it out. It comes from Windows so you might already have it on your computer. Also you can use it two different ways. You can just make your pages with it and upload them with ordinary FTP, or you can go whole hog and upload with the FP extensions. If so just let me know and I will turn on that capability on your account. But I have no experience with FP extensions so you will have to search elsewhere for help with that.

Another option is Netscape Composer. If you are using the Netscape Browser then you should have this tool. Another version of Netscape is the Mozilla browser. It is a free download (large, but free) and it has the Composer editor also. The latest version even has FTP built into it so that you can "publish" to the internet by typing in your account info and password. Cool.

The last method I am going to mention is good for people who have lots of experience with word processing programs. You can use MS Word, Word Perfect, or maybe others. Just make your page and lay it out like you want it and save it in the normal way. Then without changing anything, save another copy of it, but this time click on "save as html document", or "publish to html". Save it to the folder you have set apart on your computer as your web site folder and upload with FTP or your control panel.

But no matter what method you use you need to know how to access your account control panel (Cpanel) and FTP, which follow.

Accessing Your Control Panel

To access your online control panel go to:
https://yourdomain.com:2083/
or, if your DNS settings haven't propogated yet:
https://ipnumber:2083/

At the prompt type in your username and password. That will get you your control panel which is handy for lots of stuff. Creating email accounts, etc. Check it out but don't change anything you don't understand, OK? And log out when finished. You can edit web pages from your control panel by clicking on "file manager", then on the "www" folder. Follow the directions there and save changes. Be sure to download and save any and all files that you are going to edit so that just in case you "break them" you will have other copies.

For detailed instructions to go Cpanel Help.

FTP Access

A handier way of editing your web site is using an ftp client. WS_FTP, Filezilla and others have free versions. Download one and install it on your home computer.

Here are my instructions for Filezilla:
1. Go to Download Filezilla
2. Download the latest stable version and install it on your computer.
3. Open it and go to File --> Site Manager --> New Site.
4. Type your domain or site name where it says New FTP Site.
5. Fill in:
Host = youdomain.com
Logon type = normal
User = Username we agreed upon
Password = Password we agreed upon
Then click "Save and Exit"
Those steps will save you entering your address and password every time. Now you are ready to fly. Click the little triangle next to the icon under "File". Click on your site. That will connect you. Now in the right-hand list you should see a list of your stuff on your web site. Double-click on the public html folder. Now on the left hand side navigate to the folder on your computer where you have your web site stored. Drag the files and/or folders from the left to the right and that should do it.
Filezilla comes with secure ftp as the default setting which means your password is sent encoded over the internet. But be aware that, on our server, you will get a message that says the security cert doesn't match. Go ahead anyway, it doesn't matter in this case.
Here are my directions for WS_FTP:
1. Open it and click "Connect".
2. Click "Create site".
3. In the blanks put in:
4. Name (example--My Web Site),
5. Host address (yourdomain.com),
6. User id (username),
7. Password (which you know),
8. Account (username, optional in this case).

That's all you need so click finish.

Before connecting make sure you have a folder created on your computer just for your web site materials.

Then go online, open WS_FTP and click connect. Enter password when prompted. On the left-hand window you should navigate to the folder you just created for your web site on your home computer. Then in the right-hand window you should see the directories and files of your account on the remote server. Double-click www folder. That is where your web site goes.
